Novo guia de Esfingídeos Neotropicais / New guide on Neotropical Hawkmoths

     Ao longo dos últimos dois anos Alan Martin, juntamente com os co-autores Alexandre Soares e Jorge Bizarro, tem vindo a trabalhar no compreensivo Guia dos SPHINGIDAE da Serra dos Órgãos, Sudeste do Brasil, que foi publicado e pronto para venda no final de Abril. Trata-se do primeiro livro a fornecer um tratamento compreensivo para todas as 110 espécies de esfingídeos registradas na região, incluindo-se para cada uma delas: texto detalhado com o histórico da nomenclatura taxonômica usada; sua distribuição e épocas de vôo; e as principais características de identificação de cada. Inclui 37 pranchas coloridas que ilustram todas as espécies pela sua face superior e inferior, tanto macho como fêmea, existindo ainda mais de 120 fotos coloridas mostrando muitos desses esfingídeos nas suas posições naturais de descanso, na sua maioria tomadas na REGUA. Recorrendo a estas ilustrações, fotos e texto, qualquer observador perspicaz, sem prévio conhecimento do grupo, estará habilitado a identificar rapidamente qualquer uma das espécies descritas. O livro inclui ainda alguns capítulos introdutórios que cobrem generalidades sobre a Serra dos Órgãos e o ciclo de vida das mariposas, sendo estes mesmos capítulos fornecidos tanto em inglês como português. Os Apêndices incluem uma lista compreensiva das plantas hospedeiras por gênero. Apesar do livro se centralizar na fauna da Serra dos Órgãos, a maioria das espécies tratadas apresentam uma ampla distribuição Neotropical. Por isso, trata-se de uma obra com potencial de apelo a uma vasta audiência, que não somente os interessados nos Sphingidae do Brasil.

     Over the last two years Alan Martin with his co-authors Alexandre Soares and Jorge Bizarro have been working on the comprehensive A Guide to the Hawkmoths of the Serra dos Orgaos, South-eastern Brazil, which became available to the general public by the end of April. This book is the first to provide a comprehensive guide to all the 110 species of hawkmoths that have been recorded in the region, and for each species there is a detailed text which includes taxonomic nomenclature, distribution and flight times, along with key identification features. There are 37 colour plates illustrating all the species from above and below for males and females, and there are over 120 colour photos showing many of the hawkmoths in their natural resting postures which were mostly taken at REGUA. Using these illustrations, photos and text any keen observer, with no prior knowledge, should be able to readily identify any of the species described. The book also includes several introductory chapters which cover general information on the Serra dos Órgãos and hawkmoth life history and development, and these chapters are provided in both English and Portuguese. The Appendices also include a comprehensive list of larval host plants by genera. Although the book focuses on the Serra dos Órgãos, many of the species covered have wide distributions across the neotropics. This book should therefore appeal not only to those interested in the hawkmoths of Brazil, but to a much wider audience.
